So with the entire world following the opening of The Biennial Project's new
show ‘Bizarre Artist Happenings’ we feel that in respect to our fellow
creators we should update you, our readers, on some of the other
Biennial/Biennales taking place this summer. We will even highlight a few
that you can enter yourself including The upcoming Boston Biennial and next
year's Boston on-line Biennale.

First off, we wish we could have made an appearance at the Venice Beach
Biennale brought to you by The Hammer Museum in sunny Los Angeles CA. Years
ago, when we barely knew the ins and outs of the art fair circuit, we found
ourselves on Venice Beach thinking for sure this was the location for the
world renowned Venice Biennale. I mean Venice Beach not only reeks of
marijuana but it reeks of hipness, coolness and creativity. We simply could
not have imagined that ‘the’ prestigious art event would happen in a
decaying, sinking, outdated city in some far away land. We asked many people
where the Gioardini was located but we were always pointed to the many ‘Dr.
offices and medical facilities’ that line the Venice Beach boardwalk. Who
says that the US health system is in trouble? There are ‘Dr. offices’ on
every block filled with patients from every walk of life. They all seem to
offer a cure-all magic prescription known as ‘Medical Marijuana’ and it
helps everything from glaucoma, to stress headaches and numerous mental
illnesses. This cure all seems to be accessible to all without any long
nasty insurance forms to deal with. Any enough with that, The Venice Beach
Biennale was special because it not only ‘high’lighted famous artists such
as Barbara Kruger, Evan Holloway, Katie Grinnan and Nick Herman but it
represented the artists who show on the boardwalk each and every day. The
Venice Beach Biennale was shown in conjunction with The Hammer Museum¹s
’Made in LA’ Biennial, which is running this summer.

The Santorini Biennale of Arts is taking place on that somewhat scenic
island in Greece. The Biennale is the idea of artist, designer and economist
Kikos Papadopoulos; supported by the Municipality of Thera, the Estia
Association of Pyrgos, and the Santorini of the Past Cultural Village in
Pyrgos. This season you may want to redirect your yacht on your summer¹s
Mediterranean cruise and skip Cefalu (I mean we all know Turkish ports are
so last year) and return to the 'vintage cool' destination of Santorini. As
well as having put on a great art show with a list of artists too vast to
repeat, The Santorini Biennale has one of the best and most personable
twitter feeds out there. They are always tweeting us, The Biennial Project,
and we are always excited to tweet them back as well as retweet their twats.

So you are enjoying your summer and seeing great art at The Sydney Biennial,
Documenta and Manifesta. Let's not forget that September is approaching fast
and you don't want to get stuck without plans. September is a good time to
travel and see art because those pesky little ingrates, known as children,
are back at school. No more having to push away an entire clan who are
trying to ‘expose’ the young ones to culture while they refuse to look up
from their electronic mobile devises. At The Whitstable Biennale you will be
granted the space an adult should have. Nowhere on the venue's website do
they mention what country Whitstable is located in but we think it is
England just outside on London. We know there are one or two events taking
place in London this summer of some importance but at the moment all we can
think of is this Biennale. We also can not find any information on their
website that lists what artists are showing but it¹s a Biennale so its got
to be great. The Whitsable Biennale is also on twitter and that makes them
cool. So to find out 'some information’ on this mysterious but happening
Biennale please go to http://www.whitstablebiennale.com.

So we told you we would list a biennale or two that you can enter to become
world famous artists much like ourselves. II you follow us on Facebook, and
we know you do, because why wouldn't you, you would see the frequent
Biennale/Biennial opportunities we post for you. For those of you that are
too lazy or stupid to read our Facebook page we'll let you know here of one
or two art shows you can present at.

First there is The University of Hawaii Hilo: 2012 Pacific States Biennial
National Print Exhibition. This exhibit is open only to US residents and
residents of the US territories. We really hope all our fans in The US
Virgin Islands, America Samoa and The Federated States of Micronesia read
this and WIN!! Our territories which also include Puerto Rico, Palau and The
Midway islands all sound like warm, tropical paradises and we would love an
invitation to one of these places if the winning artist enters because they
read it in our blog. Hell even if you don¹t win and have a futon near the
beach we will visit you. So all you artists on The Marshall Islands go to
http://bayareaartgrind.com/2012/06/09/call-for-encall-for-entries-university
-of-hawaii-hilo-2012-pacific-states-biennial-national-print-exhibition/
and
enter by October 1sst.

Entries for The Kaunas Biennial, entitled "Unitext" are due by September 15th.
The 9th Kaunas Biennial UNITEXT will create conditions for immediate
collisions of an artwork and a spectator, allowing the experience of art as
a universal text. Curators of the exhibition together with artists will
pursue a concept that is new and unfamiliar in a cultural context and will
consolidate it by presenting practical examples. We will go into the
question of a unitext, which is the latest link in work -> text -> intertext
-> hypertext -> unitext semiotic chain of a philosophic / art criticism /
artistic field.

Those Lithuanians certainly do not beat around the bush and get right to he
point of what you should create. If the theme wasn't enticing enough we know
That The Most Interesting Artist in The World, formally known as Michael St.
Germain, showed in Kauunas in 2005 before he became as famous and as
interesting as he is today. For more information for this biennale taking
place in Lithuania's second largest city please go to

We cannot wait for information to be released for 21st INTERNATIONAL
BIENNIAL OF HUMOUR AND SATIRE IN THE ARTS /IBHSA/ - GABROVO 2013!  That is
one we plan to dominate in ourselves. If you feel, as we do that the Biennial
Project should be the center of attention at this Bulgarian Biennale by all
means let them know.

Finally stay tuned for the details to two of the earth's, hell the solar
system's biggest art events. One being the Boston Biennial being held in
Boston this December as in 2012. Secondly The 2nd Boston Online Biennial
will be held later this spring with another fabulous reception being held
the opening weekend of The Venice Biennale, in fucking Venice, again. Keep
reading our blog, our twitter and our facebook for details.

Also stay tuned for our Global Biennial Project collaborators to update you
on the art they saw this summer. We are hoping Marlene Sarnoff will tell us
all about the Sydney Biennale or that Tom Estes might write about the
artistic happening around that little sporting event taking place in his
town of London right now. We also sent our very own Charlene Liska across
the pond this summer as an envoy todOCUMENTA(13) and Manifesta The European Biennial of Contemporary Art..

Global Biennial Digest - March 2011

As loyal disciples of The Biennial Project you must have noticed that from time to time we like to fill you in on what is happening with biennials/biennales across our globe. We’ll let you know which biennials we deem hot or interesting, how to enter one or two of them and sometimes ‘who’ people are wearing to these festive, thought-provoking and popular events.

So as the saying goes, in like a Lion out like Lamb…………

Singapore is known for great shopping and a heavy-duty financial market. Now this country, made up of 63 islands, will also be known for The Singapore Biennale 2011. This event of all events opens up on March 13 and runs until May 15th. Its theme is Open House. We, The Biennial Project love to go to Open Houses on Sunday afternoons (when we are not making epic pieces of art). We,The Biennial Project like to check out how other people live, and then judge how they live. Basically we, The Biennial Project enjoy being bitchy. The Biennial Project thinks that maybe The Singaporeans hope that the showing artists will look at the interpretation as people opening up their homes and hearts to friends and loved ones as in a party. We think judging other folk is more fun. No cleaning up after guests is involved. No red wine stains on the sofa. No trying to get your drunken friend of a friend into a cab so they don’t run over overweight, handicapped, American kids on the road.

You will see that the first thing you see when you open the website to http://www.singaporebiennale.org/ are advertisements for the Merlion Hotel. Hey, someone has to pay for all this.

Seriously now….this Biennale looks like it will be da bomb. Almost 50% of the artists are from Asia and 9 out of the 62 showing artists are from Singapore. 62 artists for 63 islands!!! Artistic Director Matthew Nguiwith leads the Curatorial Team with help from Russell Storer and Trevor Smith. The public (this means us for now) is invited to explore installations in sights all around the city such as the Old Kallang Airport, the Marina, A Shopping Center and, most interestingly, some sort of Orwellian Housing Project. (As well as, of course, the Merlion Hotel).

Art Rock stars and yummy, man-eye-candy Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset are exhibiting (WE still get hard thinking about them and their house installation at The Venice Biennale 2009 and The Prada Store outside Marfa, Texas). Ming Wong from Singapore Goto Design from Japan and Taiwan will have swag in their Singaporean steps as well. Ceal Floyer,Rafael Lozano-Hemmer and Tatzu Nishi will be strutting from island to island as it should be.

This year, on your Middle Eastern winter vacation, plan on by-passing Dubai and Abu Dhabi and instead head straight north to the city of Shajah for the 10th Sharjah Biennial, 2011. Shariah is considered to be the cultural capital of the region and by looking at photos it has a kick ass Ferris Wheel to ride. The Biennial theme is ’Plot for a Biennial’ and will be held at sites all over the city including Shatjah’s Historic Cricket Stadium which is now an Avant Garde contemporary art space. The Biennial, which runs from March 16th until May16th, has too many artists to mention. Information can be found on

http://www.sharjahart.org/biennial/sharjah-biennial-10/welcome

Be Forewarned

If getting piss ass high and hunting for one-night stands are your idea of great biennial experience (ranks high on our list), be warned that Sharjah is the only Emirate in which the sale, possession and consumption of alcohol is banned. The Emirate also maintains the strictest decency laws in the UAE with a conservative dress code required for both men and women. Mixing between unmarried men and women is illegal: "A man and a woman who are not in a legally acceptable relationship should not, according to the booklet, be alone in public places, or in suspicious times or circumstances”. So hiding a bottle of vodka under your burka is probably not a good idea.

Slightly more relaxed then U.A.E., The Commonwealth of Virginia’s Roanoke College is hosting their own little Biennial. Carter Foster who is currently a curator at THE WHITNEY judges this show!!! He will be giving a lecture there this Thursday evening at 6pm in Roanoke’s very own Olin Hall. We at The Biennial Project see this as an opportunity to kiss some major Whitney ass. The name ‘Carter Foster’ has sort of a porn star/soap opera ring to it. The Biennial Project likes to imagine that he is hot. BIENNIAL CALL FOR ENTRIES

For those of us who like to have our art looked at more then we like to look at others (it is about us after all) here is your chance to hit the biennial hall of fame. We at The Biennial Project hope you will take advantage of some of these Call to Entries.

The Halpert Biennial ’11 in Boone, North Carolina has applications available at http://halpert.tcva.appstate.edu/. This is one of those fantastic Biennials that give you cold, hard cash if your art is better then the rest. If you win, we at The Biennial Project do not necessarily expect you to split your cash and prizes with us, but it would be nice. We promise we will be responsible with your contribution and will not spend all the money on drugs and prostitutes (unless you want us too, that would make us happy).

While we are highlighting the wonderful small towns of America, we wouldn’t want you to miss your chance to exhibit at The South Bend Museum of Art Biennial 26. Entries are due on April 1. Six years ago my teenage niece ran away from home to shack up with a guy she met on the Internet. After my sister located her it took a few days of bribing the kid to get her to come home for the Junior Prom. To kill time my sister actually went to The South Bend Museum of Art Biennial and said ‘it was pretty cool and was a nice distraction from all the life drama going on’’. Information can be found at http://southbendart.org/index.php?lt=1&p=see_exhibitionopportunities

Finally we want to give you the chance to put The Chelsea Biennial of Art 2011  on your C.V.s. The word Biennial carries lots of weight and so does the word Chelsea. If you make into this Biennial it will look as if you have FINALLY ARRIVED. We have no idea if this Biennial will be any good but really…who cares? It sounds great on your resume and isn’t that what really matters? For information go to

http://paulabarrchelsea.com/aboutus.html

Having your own Biennial or Biennale? Let us know. We are always happy to lend a hand and publicize your event. Look how big The Venice Biennale got after we went.

Having your own Biennial or Biennale? Let us know. We are always happy to lend a hand and publicize your event. Look how big The Venice Biennale got after we went.

New Biennial Project Feature - Global Biennialism Digest

Well, we've been thinking....Now don't get all worried, you'll like this. The Biennial Project is, as you may have noticed, mostly about us. We must make it to the top of the World Art Heap, AND make no mistake about it, we will!  But you, our devoted followers, also desire success.  And we understand that people with the good taste to follow us deserve world-wide recognition as well.  SO... we are inaugurating a new regular blog feature dedicated to helping you too become masters of your art-world fate.  Each month we will search far and wide for the most up-to-the minute info about the coolest biennial exhibits out there.  We will provide links related to submission opportunities, exhibition dates, and interesting biennial reviews, as well as fun sites that delve into the biennialism phenomenon.  Our first entry in that category is a nifty site that we wish we had produced - but it was actually done by the Asian Art Archive - called   All You Wanted To Know About International Art Biennials.   Check out their Did You Know page for great info and trivia on the development of biennialism worldwide.

Feel free to pass this info along to your friends - and encourage them to join The Biennial Project Fan Club/Mailing List on our website - www.biennialproject.com or subscribe to our blog to continue to receive regular updates about the biennial world.

There, now don't say we never did anything for you!

XOXOXO,

The Biennial Project

Upcoming Biennial Openings

Bucharest Biennial

This biennial is curated by perhaps the youngest biennial curator yet: he was born in 1987 (after the fall of the Berlin Wall and also after intern Lorraine was born - truly frightening!). Their website lists their favorite restaurants and hotels, so have a good time in Romania!

Dak'Art Biennial
If you're able to go to Senegal, definitely pop by Dak'Art, the Dakar Biennial. There isn't much information on the website, but perhaps sending an email to the organizers would help in locating where to stay.

Cool Biennial Reviews & Interviews

Series of videos by jameskalm about the 2010 Whitney Biennial - apparently he was removed from the press list for the 2008 Biennial and got busted by security, which gives him an interesting perspective.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kS7wn0bJZDM

Cool Biennialism Links

This is a poem about the meaning of "Biennialism/Biennialist" from a very interesting web site that discusses an art project called "Emergency Room". I recommend checking out the rest of the web site, but this is what got us there: http://www.emergencyrooms.org/dictionary/words/biennalist.html
